Saint Leo Preparatory School was chartered in 1920 and earned accreditation in 1921.  It wasn't until 1929 that the first yearbook, called “The Lion,” was published.  The first issue came out in soft cover measuring about eight by eleven inches. This continued until 1946 when the first hardcover yearbook was printed.  The 1952 issue was slightly larger measuring 12 by 9 1/4 inches but subsequent years were the standard size. The only other variations in size consisted of the two pamphlets published during the war years of 1944 and 1945, rather than a yearbook due to the wartime shortage of paper. The 1944 pamphlet was about five by seven inches and consisted of 18 pages. In this issue all classes, seventh grade through senior, were group photos. This group photo concept repeated itself in "The Lion" of 1960 and most of the Holy Name Annuals.

The largest yearbook, 157 pages, came out in May 1959 and represents a photographic history of the buildings and life at Saint Leo more than any other yearbook.  This was the time Brother Bernard was photographing everything which moved and didn't move.  In contrast, the smallest yearbook was the class of 1964 which had no underclassmen, no major ball teams except for basketball and soccer so there wasn't much to publish.  The only yearbook with printing on the outside back cover was in 1960.

Holy Name Academy, chartered in 1893, published its first Yearbook in 1960. Prior to this there were “memory books” which were small spiral booklets to record student autographs, memories and pictures. It measured (in 1955-56) 5 3/4 by 6 inches and contained group photos of each class. When these commenced and what years were published is unknown.
