The story on the 1948 yearbook as Father James Hoge, O.S.B. told us.
The yearbook editor or someone presented the pages to him for inclusion
in the 1948 yearbook. After reviewing the two pages he told the person
he didn't think the Headmaster would approve such pictures, but to go
and ask anyway. (The two pages consisted of two pages of photographs of
the girlfriends of some of the students in two piece bathing suits,
skirts pulled to the thighs, and general photographs) As
suggested the pages went to the Headmaster and he took a glancing look
at them and said he didn't think there was much wrong with them and to
go ahead and include them into the yearbook.
The yearbook was printed but before distribution, the Abbot reviewed a
copy. When he saw the two pages he told the class the annual could not
be handed out. They compromised by suggesting the
two pages be ripped out. As the ripping was in progress, Father
James ran to the print office and
stopped them. He reasoned that if they tore the pages out, four pages
would be missing from the annual when only two were in question. He
told them to glue the pages together thus preserving the other two
pages, which they did. Go to 2005 and Father James finds a copy
of the banned yearbook and takes it to the University to see if they
could "unglue" the pages. They did. Here they are.
